April 2012 Produser terkenal Kang Dong Chul, atau lebih dikenal Brave Brother mengumumkan pembentukan grup Kpop dibawah manajemennya sendiri. Dengan pengalamannya dibidang musik Kpop yang banyak melahirkan lagu-lagu populer, Kang Dong Chul mempersiapkan Big Star selama kurang lebih 4 tahun masa pelatihan intens.
5 Mei 2012, dokumentari perjalanan kelompok ditampilkan dalam acara reality show SBS MTV "Big Star Show". Acara menampilkan masa-masa pelatihan anak-anak Big Star, termasuk seleksi anggota yang akan memulai debut, dimana 2 pesertanya Kim Yoohwan dan Jeon Hojun gagal bergabung dengan grup.
12 Juli Big Star merilis mini album debut pertamanya berjudul "Big Start", dan memulai debut panggung pertamanya di program musik M! Countdown M.net.
